With the recently published preface on "The future of fintech — Towards ubiquitous financial services" the third special issue on financial technology (fintech) in the journal Electronic Markets s completed. The special issue was organized by Rainer Alt, Gilbert Fridgen and Younghoon Chang and comprises 11 articles on centralized and decentralized finance as well as on crowdfunding. All 11 articles are framed in the preface, which describes the four phases in the evolution of fintech, the differentiation of the institutional and the functional meaning of fintech, three important technological developments (from centralized to decentralized, from static to adaptive and from multimodal to hybrid) and three converging forces (convergence of technology, convergence of finance and IT, convergence of finance and real economy) towards the future of ubiquitous finance.
