According to Section 2 of the Saxon Higher Education Freedom Act (SächsHSFG), the faculty is the "basic organisational unit of the university". It is the next administrative level below the university level.
Commissions are appointed by the Faculty Council to prepare decisions. The meeting shall be chaired by the Dean or a member of the Commission designated by the Dean. The commissions are usually composed in the same proportion as the Faculty Council. An important exception is the Study Commission.
Faculty Council
In addition to the Dean and the Dean's Office, the Faculty Council is an organ of the Faculty and is composed of elected representatives of all status groups (university lecturers, academic staff, other staff, students) as well as the Equal Opportunities Officer.

- the adoption of the study and examination regulations,
- the adoption of the promotion and habilitation regulations,
- proposals for the establishment, discontinuation and amendment of study programmes,
- the coordination of research projects,
