SMILE-supported start-up EST3R optimizes the molecular recycling of plastic waste

The team led by Leipzig chemist Dr. Christian Sonnendecker has discovered an enzyme that decomposes PET, known for example from plastic bottles. This group wants to bring the technology to market soon

 The SMILE start-up initiative at the University of Leipzig is supporting the project. With the enzyme PHL7, biological PET recycling could become possible much faster than previously thought. The results were published in the scientific journal ChemSusChem and selected as the cover story.
