This week, we held the eighth IDEAS Research Colloquium of 2023 – our overall 32nd session!

Aliou Fousseni, a Beninese PhD student in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Malawi), presented his preliminary results on „Diversification of aquaculture species in Benin: morphometric characterization and potentialities for genetic improvement of Sarotherodon galilaeus”, mapping out a pathway for genetic improvement of the species as food fish. He showed us the relevance of morphogenetic analysis to assess the potential of the fish species in Beninese aquaculture to increase food security and decrease dependency on food imports of his home country.

After that, Dr. Solomon Olum from Gulu University (Uganda) delivered a comprehensive lecture on “Quantitative Data Analysis - Techniques and Tools”. He demonstrated how statistics are used to condense data and identify patterns and relationships within them. Further, Dr. Olum gave us some guidelines on how to choose the right statistical method for our respective research topics and reminded us to define an analysis plan as a guide of which data to collect at the beginning of our research journeys.

Over 30 participants from four continents attended and engaged with our expert to dive into the details of how to approach big amounts of data using statistical models. We are looking forward to continuing this conversation on our SEPT community app!
