Joint International Master in Sustainable Development

Joint International Master in Sustainable Development

This international, interdisciplinary and research-oriented program is concerned with questions of sustainability, environment and development, and with the challenges of creating a sustainable society. Students examine different perspectives on the potential and problems related to the changes relevant to these issues, and thus gain increased competence dealing with current and impending questions of sustainable development. The program is characterized by a focus on environmental questions and social conflict, as well as by its interdisciplinary approach. It prepares students for a dissertation and a career in academic fields, as well as for occupations in various companies, organizations and administrative institutions.

Study abroad – for one semester minimum – is an integral part of the program. With several partner universities – Graz (Austria), Leipzig (Germany), Utrecht (Netherlands) and Venice (Italy) – as well as cooperating universities in Basel (Switzerland) and Hiroshima (Japan), students have the possibility to spend their time abroad in diverse places.

In the first semester, students learn the basics of sustainable development: Central issues are climate protection, urban geography, sustainability and environmental management in companies. Also, students complete coursework in economics, management science and globalization research.

In the second semester, students continue their studies abroad. According to their previous experiences, adviser recommendations, and their individual academic interests, students are encouraged to take courses from one of the cooperating universities suited to their branch of qualification. The language of study is English. The University of Leipzig offers two branches of qualification within this Master program:

  • Resources Management
    • Water Resources Management
    • Sustainable Energy Economics
    • Land Management
  • Environmental Technology Management
    • Air Pollution Abatement and Safety Engineering
    • Water, Waste Water and Waste
    • Energy Engineering and Management

For other branches and courses offered by other universities, please consult the program website.

In the third semester, students concentrate on a long-term project – usually a case study or a research project – and complete coursework in project management and company management.

During the final semester, students write and defend their Master theses.
